Lessons from the wild 2: Sometimes the lions are minding their own business
In case you missed how this all started. We (me and my family) visited Liwonde National Park (LNP) the other day and I looked to nature for the lessons I'm sharing.
As our safari into the vast park continued, we got a tip through our guide that there were four lions-a female and some cubs by the river (I'm guessing its a perennial one because there was no sign of a river, just a dry gully) ahead of us.
I must say I was more excited than scared. I had seen lions before, at Majete National Park, they appeared exhausted by the October sun and were seemingly not keen on moving an inch unless disturbed, the guide had said.
Lions were reintroduced in LNP in 2018 courtesy of the Lion Recovery Fund and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, after more than 20 years of absence in the park. Since then, the pride has grown with a total of four cubs and now numbers 13, according to African Parks which now runs LNP.
Back to our experience. As we approached, we spotted the lions! The mother lying on her tummy, the cubs were all in various relaxed poses, basking in the sun.
My lesson, lions or your enemies are not always after you; sometimes they’re taking a chill pill; take one yourself!
Our guide also told us, a lion only eat 7kgs of the meat from a catch. Lions do not hunt as often as we think, they can go up to a week without hunting…still they’re lions osawaputa dala!
